State Championship Game
May 24,1968
Columbus, Ohio
| The world just seemed right in 1968. Buddy pitched in 12 games and was 9-1. He struck out 129 batters in 67 1/3 innings and gave up 1 earned run for an ERA of 0.10. He pitched 7 of the 8 state Tournament games including the State Semi-Final and Championship games in the same day 20 minutes apart. A cramp in his forearm in the 7th inning of the Championship Game added some drama but for the day he threw 2 shutouts, gave up 5 hits and struck out 27. The Cleveland media still calls him the "Greatest High School pitcher in History". The Ohio High School Athletic Association changed the rules as to how many inning a player could pitch in one day so his double header feat will never be duplicated. Some call it the Buddy Schultz Rule. He was a 4 year letterman at Shaw and was drafted in the fourth round of the 1968 draft, 71st in the nation by the Philadelphia Phillies. |
